Re: What is your favourite fact about the City of London
The City has a fella called The Remembrancer who sits in Parliament watching what the Govt is up too. Yep foolish but true, harks back to the days the City bankrolled the King, wars, foreign colonial sorties etc. Basically they are a country apart.

1) I was earlier referring to the cheshire cheese in crutched friars, near fenchurch street - it is a shit hole.

2) The mitre has now been mentioned several times, recommend it - but google its history first.

Google was fucking busy today eh?

365 feet from the top of the cross on top of the dome of St.Paul's to tge ground.

1 foot for every day of the year.

Sir Christopher Wren, a proper genius.

The Old Mitre is a great pub, with quite a bit of history. Think they filmed a bit of Lock Stock in there too.

The Queen has to ask permission to pass through the City of London by asking the Lord Mayor.

Another fact is, I have no idea who the lord mayor is and what his purpose is.

As for pubs, take them away from central London and head for the south-bank or take them to Upton Park for a cultural tore of what Baghdad looks like after the bombs have hit

A number of my ancestors were Mercers. I contacted them to get more info out of them but they were curiously reticent about telling me anything. I reckon they owe me a fortune.

Re: What is your favourite fact about the City of London
That I live there and am a Freeman of the City. Elections for the Corporation's Common Council are bizarre. Wardmotes are held during the day and presided over by Beadles- dressed just like Harry Secombe in Oliver. Nobody knows how much money the Corporation is sitting on, but it alleged they own the freehold on much of the land in Sydney, Hong Kong and the Wall Street area of Manhattan. Dick Whittington's £7k bequest to the Mercers is now worth about a quarter of a billion. In the Middle Ages London had more churches per sq mile than any other city in Europe. Bow Belles are on Cheapside EC2 not Bow. If you were born within 5 miles of there you are a Cockney.

That none of South 'London' is in it. That South 'London' (Southwark) was only built to serve it.Their whole reason for existing is to serve us.

Think that is the Olde Mitre Tavern.

Tree isn't haunted, but is said that Queen Elizabeth I danced around it when she was a Princess.

Only thing I remember has probably been mentioned and that's the smallest police station in the UK in Trafalgar Square.

Can't be arsed to see if it's been mentioned.

Also Ely Place although in the city is not part of it, it comes under the jurisdiction of the Cambridge diocese, apparently theres a pub in there with a haunted tree inside it.

More people have died jumping off the Monument than were killed in the Great Fire.

There is a thick red layer of burnt debris in the ground under old Londinium from when the young city was burnt down during Boudica's uprising.

The monument is the same height as it is distance from where the fire of London started in pudding lane

Re: What is your favourite fact about the City of London
The heart of London is the Londonstone (maybe an old Roman marker) which is set into the wall in Cannon Street.

Mounting Street near St Pauls has nothing to do with horses, its not gar from the site of old Gropecunt Lane

Re: What is your favourite fact about the City of London
Off ludgate hill is the old bailey where the notorious newgate prison was sited I think and now obviously central criminal court, well at the top of old bailey is where prisoners were hanged, if cross at the top into Giltspur St thats where they used to joust and earnt their spurs (cunts). Of Giltspur street is cock lane which was notorious for prostitution also there is the boy of glutten statue which is where the great fire ended.

Check these out because im just pulling this stuff from the back of my memory from doing the knowledge
